Sleep More To Boost Your Immunity

Sleep can have profound effects on immune function. When it comes to understanding the beneficial effects of sleep on immune function and combatting viral infection, we encourage you to watch this video by Dr Seheult, the author of and a board certified respiratory and sleep physician, critical care doctor and internal medicine specialist. In this video, Dr Seheult reviews previous studies suggesting that adequate sleep can improve our antibody response after vaccination and how it can also prevent symptoms of the common cold following exposure to rhinovirus. He also explains implications this might have for combatting COVID-19.

Some recommendations for you:

  • Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night, noting that the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
  • Sleeping during the hours of 10 pm to 1 am seems to be most important for immune function (via the effects of growth hormone on IL-12 production and activation of TH4 helper cells).
